Beef Stew (Gulyas)

  • 2 lbs beef stew cut in cubes
  • 2 cups chopped onions
  • 2 tablespoons of butter
  • Olive oil
  • 2 cloves of garlic finely chopped
  • 1 carrot chopped
  • 1 potato chopped
  • 1 teaspoon of cumin
  • 1 teaspoon of paprika
  • ½ teaspoon of marjoram
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon of flour
  • Hot water or chicken broth (enough to cover the meat)
  1. Chopped the onions and the garlic.
  2. In a large pot saute the chopped onions and garlic with the olive oil and butter at medium heat.
  3. Once the onions are translucent raise the heat to medium high and add the beef
  4. Season meat with the cumin, paprika, marjoram, salt, and pepper. Stir the contents of the pot.
  5. When the meat is seared (mostly cooked) add the flour and mix. Lower the heat to medium.
  6. Peel the carrot and potato and chop into chunks.
  7. Add vegetables to the pot and cook with the meat for approximately 10 minutes. Stir the contents in the pot.
  8. Boil water or chicken stock and add to the pot, enough to cover the meat.
  9. Transfer the beef stew to the crock pot.
  10. Cover crock pot with lid.
  11. Cook between 4 to 5 hours at the highest setting.
